Street Peeper Picks: Daniel Jackson of Surface to Air & BBlessing: Monday, April 20th 2009

Here are Street Peeper picks from Daniel Jackson, a longtime friend of Street Peeper, and co-founder of Surface to Air, and also creative director for Bblessing. Busy guy... Daniel Jackson was born in the Seattle area and moved to New York to study studio art at NYU in 1993, merely one year after Theo Huxtable's televised graduation on the final Cosby Show. While in school, he founded art and design collective Surface to Air along with his college pals, including another SP pal, Gordon Hull. Things got a lot busier for Daniel soon afterwards, traveling back and forth between Paris and New York while launching the Surface to Air gallery/boutique in Paris and finishing a Master's Degree in Industrial Design at the Pratt Institute.

Now, Daniel Jackson is the designer of the accessories collection for Surface to Air, which includes such iconic pieces as the multi-finger brass knuckle rings and those ubiquitous dagger pendants. In 2006, he and other partners established Bblessing -- the menswear boutique and clothing label based in NYC's Lower East Side.

Also, Daniel likes to party, which is how we met... Anyhow, here are 10 of his favorite photos on Street Peeper, along with his commentary:

HIM: How does one pull off blue-collar vs terrorist so effortlessly? By being one of Manhattan's most consistently stylish men. It's an appropriately eccentric look, complete with newspaper and, one imagines, a pack of rollies, and the number for a great sushi restaurant. NYC in a single outfit.
HER: I am so pleased that people from Los Angeles can dress this well. It reaffirms my faith in humanity. I love the contrast in textures that adds so much to a monochromatic ensemble.

HER: Vivan's ensemble really works well here. I can't say enough good things about the bowtie/duffel sweater combo. It's an amazing boyish girl about town look that says a lot about the current trends in New York. And I designed the bag too!
HIM: OK, Tokyo is one of my favorite cities for a variety of reasons. This look is certainly one of them. I like that we can go to the disco without leaving the street corner, and the new sartorial standard for the western world will be to match your glasses to your shoes. I'm pretty tired of Keffiyeh scarves, but with those pants, who cares?

HIM: His look is a real winner. It feels very timeless and effortless, and has a multi/international feel that is pretty seductive. I'm a huge sucker for scarves, and the rumpled tuxedo jacket brings home the gold. Is that a pocket square or Marlboro reds? Bonus points!
HER: A simple outfit, yes, but this feels very modern to me. I imagine lots of sun/salt water fading and distressing, to produce an urban summer look that is androgynous and appropriately casual. There's a story here - rumpled linen workwear and coupes de champagne for 2010!

HER: This is a really wonderful outfit. I love how it starts off at the top in a pretty conservative manner, and then gets more and more bananas as it goes south. Kind of reminds me of an 80's London punk/new wave look. You could swap out the boots for Docs and the jacket for a Perfecto and it would still be awesome.
HIM: Ladies and gentlemen, this is a perfect example of how fashion (or style) is about so much more than the clothes. Does anything say summer more than a beer and unshaven face? I really dig the dress pant shorts and top - it's like the little brother of a Autumn outfit. Normally I don't like socks w/shorts, but for some reason it doesn't seem so bad here, because you can imagine he's got the garters in his back pocket.

HER: Hell yeah, why not? This is appropriately eccentric, the key to pulling it off clearly being the personality behind. I really like the leopard print scarf with the purple cape (is it red?), and the long gloves are a winner too. I feel she succeeds in combining a lot of very strong disparate elements, which in many cases is a sure fire recipe for disaster. The best thing here though, is that she really pulls off this look in what appears to be a bombed out wasteland. Ah, London.
HIM: Simple, basic, classic. This would look awesome on a girl or guy. You could imagine this as some sort of post-skinhead look, complete with bottle o' ale and prison bars for effect. I've never been to Melbourne, but this seems to capture the spirit, sort of UK in the sun. Effortless and very timely.
